About

APAE (Associação de Pais e Amigos dos Excepcionais) was founded on 11 December 1954 in Rio de Janeiro, when American diplomat and mother Beatrice Bemis brought the model to Brazil. By 1962, twelve units had formed a National Federation; the federation is now headquartered in Brasília. APAE Brasil has grown into the largest disability service network in Latin America, with over 2,100 chapters serving approximately 350,000 people.

What They Do

APAE units deliver a comprehensive continuum of services across health, education, and social assistance for people with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and multiple disabilities. Services include early intervention, special education, vocational training, supported employment, dental care, physical therapy, and social assistance. The federation also advocates at federal level for legislation protecting the rights of people with intellectual disabilities.

Who They Serve

APAE Brasil serves people with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and multiple disabilities of all ages, with particular strength in childhood and adolescence. Its family-led governance model ensures parents and caregivers are at the centre of policy-making at both local and national levels.
