About

Hadley is a Winnetka, Illinois-based nonprofit founded in 1920 as the first distance-learning school for blind adults in the world. For more than a century it has made quality education and skills development freely accessible to people with vision loss and their support networks, regardless of geographic location or income.

What They Do

Hadley offers more than 600 workshops, self-paced courses, peer discussion groups, and podcasts covering braille, assistive technology, independent living skills, employment, hobbies, and emotional wellbeing. All content is delivered online, by phone, or by mail — removing barriers for people in rural areas or with mobility limitations — and is designed specifically for adults with vision loss.

Who They Serve

Hadley serves adults with any degree of vision loss — including those newly blind or experiencing low vision — as well as their family members and the professionals who support them (teachers, rehabilitation specialists, orientation and mobility instructors), all at no cost worldwide.

Community Note

Founded 1920 as the world's first distance-learning school for blind adults; serves 10,000+ students annually at no charge.
