Holy Land Institute for the Deaf(HLID)
A pioneering residential school and rehabilitation center for deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind children in Salt, Jordan, established in 1964. The institute provides K–12 education, vocational training, and audiological services under the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem.
About
The Holy Land Institute for the Deaf (HLID) was founded in 1964 in the historic city of Salt, Jordan, north of Amman. Originally a small school for deaf children, the institute has grown over six decades into one of the most comprehensive deaf education and rehabilitation centers in the Arab world. It operates under the auspices of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem.
What They Do
HLID provides a full K–12 academic boarding program conducted in sign language, alongside audiological assessments, speech therapy, and hearing device fitting. Vocational training programs prepare older students for employment in trades including carpentry, tailoring, printing, and beauty services. The institute also offers deafblind support — a rare regional specialty — and runs outreach programs for families in rural Jordan who cannot access specialist deaf education locally.
Who They Serve
HLID's residential model serves deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind children from across Jordan, including from communities far from Amman where local specialist schooling is unavailable. The boarding program accommodates students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with scholarship support from international partner organizations.
