Jamaica Association for the Deaf(JAD)
Founded in 1938, the Jamaica Association for the Deaf is one of the oldest and largest disability organisations in the English-speaking Caribbean, operating eight schools island-wide for Deaf and hard-of-hearing persons. It provides special and vocational education, audiological assessment, Jamaican Sign Language instruction, and employment support for the Deaf community from early childhood through adulthood.
About
The Jamaica Association for the Deaf (JAD) was founded in 1938 by Rev. F.W. Gilby and has grown into one of the most established disability service organisations in the English-speaking Caribbean. Headquartered at Hope Estate, Papine in Kingston, JAD operates eight schools spanning pre-school through vocational levels across the island.
What They Do
JAD delivers special and inclusive education, audiological assessment and hearing rehabilitation, Jamaican Sign Language (JSL) training for students and the public, vocational skills programmes, and employment placement services. It provides social services and advocacy for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community throughout Jamaica and supports JSL as a recognised language.
