About this resource

About

Able Flight was founded in 2006 with the mission of opening sport aviation to people with physical disabilities. Operating through partnerships with flight schools across the US, Able Flight has helped hundreds of people with limb differences, paralysis, and other physical conditions earn their FAA pilot certificates.

What It Does

Able Flight provides scholarships covering the full cost of flight training — typically $10,000–$12,000 — for qualified applicants with physical disabilities. Training leads to an FAA Sport Pilot Certificate or Powered Parachute Pilot Certificate using aircraft with hand controls and adaptive equipment. The organisation also assists in obtaining FAA medical exemptions and supports graduates in purchasing or renting adaptive aircraft.

Who It Helps

Adults with physical disabilities including limb differences, paralysis, cerebral palsy, and other conditions that do not impair cognitive function, who want to learn to fly as a recreational pursuit or career pathway. Financial need is considered in scholarship awards.
