About
Achilles International was founded in 1983 when runner Dick Traum brought an athlete with an amputated leg into the New York City Marathon. It has since grown into an organisation with chapters across the US and in 14 countries, helping thousands of athletes with disabilities compete in mainstream road races rather than segregated events.
What It Does
Achilles provides free weekly running programmes led by volunteer guides who accompany athletes during training and competition. Participants include people with visual impairments, limb differences, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, post-stroke conditions, and many other disabilities. The Freedom Team programme specifically supports US military veterans.
Who It Helps
People of all ages with any disability who want to participate in running — from recreational joggers to marathon competitors. Volunteer guides are paired with athletes based on pace and needs. All programmes are free to athletes with disabilities.
