About this resource

About

Founded in 1987 in Oakland, California, AXIS Dance Company is one of the world's foremost physically integrated performance companies. AXIS creates and performs contemporary dance that features disabled and non-disabled artists working collaboratively, fundamentally challenging conventional ideas of virtuosity, beauty, and who gets to be on stage.

What It Does

AXIS produces full-length professional dance performances, touring nationally and internationally. The company runs educational programmes including competitive summer dance intensives, mentorship schemes pairing emerging disabled choreographers with established artists, and community engagement workshops for dancers of all abilities. AXIS also advocates publicly for greater inclusion of disabled artists across the performing arts sector.

Who It Helps

Disabled dancers, choreographers, and performing artists — particularly wheelchair users and people with physical disabilities — who wish to develop professional dance careers. Audiences seeking innovative, inclusive contemporary performance also benefit from AXIS's touring and education programmes.
