About
AXS Map was created by filmmaker Jason DaSilva after he was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis and began experiencing the daily frustration of inaccessible urban spaces. Launched in 2012 and built on Google Maps, AXS Map translates community knowledge into an accessible, searchable map that helps others identify barriers before they encounter them.
What It Does
Users answer standardised yes/no questions about venue accessibility — Is there a ramp? Does the restroom door swing outward? Is there table space for a wheelchair? — to generate an objective, comparable rating. The platform regularly hosts "mapathons": community events where groups gather to rate local businesses together and rapidly expand coverage in a neighbourhood. Available via website, iOS, and Android.
Who It Helps
Wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments who want peer-verified, objective accessibility ratings before visiting unfamiliar venues in their own city or while travelling.
