About
BlindSquare is developed by MIPsoft and was first released in 2012. It has grown into the most globally deployed GPS accessibility app for visually impaired users, operating in 186 countries and supporting 26 languages. It is available for iPhone and iPad through the App Store.
What It Does
BlindSquare draws on Foursquare and OpenStreetMap data to announce nearby points of interest, street names, and intersections through a clear synthetic voice as users travel. Users can shake their device to hear their current location, mark and return to saved locations, set a destination beacon that guides them toward a goal, and filter the categories of points of interest they hear. The app pairs with third-party navigation apps for full turn-by-turn routing and also works in mapped indoor spaces.
Who It Helps
BlindSquare is designed for blind, deafblind, and low-vision pedestrians who travel independently in urban environments, on trails, or via public transit. Its extensive language support makes it a practical choice for visually impaired travellers worldwide.
