About this resource

About

CapTel was developed by Ultratec and is one of the original IP Captioned Telephone Service (IP CTS) providers approved by the FCC. The service is funded through the ADA Telecommunications Relay Service program and has delivered more than 400 million captioned calls over more than 20 years.

What It Does

Users dial normally and captions appear automatically on the CapTel display or app screen during the call. If a word is missed, users scroll the caption history to catch up. The dedicated CapTel telephone has a large illuminated display and works on any standard phone line; the Hamilton Mobile CapTel app brings the same service to iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

Who It Helps

People with hearing loss who want to continue using the phone independently—particularly older adults experiencing gradual hearing loss who are comfortable with a traditional telephone form factor and want captions without switching to a smartphone app.
