About this resource

About

Cboard is a free, open-source AAC application backed by the UNICEF Innovation Fund. It was built to address a critical gap in global AAC access: most commercial AAC tools are expensive, require internet-connected downloads, and are only available in a handful of languages. Cboard runs directly in the browser — no app store, no account, no cost — and supports over 40 languages, making it accessible in communities worldwide that mainstream AAC vendors do not reach.

What It Offers

  • Browser-based AAC: Runs directly in any modern web browser on desktop, tablet, or mobile — including offline after initial load
  • Symbol communication boards: Pre-loaded with common vocabulary using open symbol libraries; fully customisable with your own images and words
  • Text-to-speech: Converts board selections to spoken output across 40+ languages and voice options
  • Switch scanning support: Compatible with single-switch and two-switch scanning for users who cannot access a touchscreen directly
  • Progressive Web App (PWA): Can be installed on Android and iOS home screens for native-like access without going through an app store
  • Free and open-source: Source code is publicly available; no licensing fees, subscriptions, or hidden costs
  • Board sharing: Community boards shared between users and therapists

Who It's For

Cboard is for non-speaking and minimally verbal individuals of all ages who need an AAC solution — particularly those in contexts where commercial AAC is unaffordable, unavailable, or too complex to set up. It is widely used in low-resource school settings, international contexts, and as a starter AAC tool while families explore longer-term solutions. All features are free; no account is required to start using it.
