About
Founded in 1980 by Douglas Keil and a small group of dedicated volunteers, Challenge Alaska started with a single adaptive programme at Alyeska Ski Resort. Now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving over 1,000 people annually, the organisation provides one of the most geographically expansive adaptive sports programmes in the US, reaching communities across Alaska.
What It Does
Winter programmes include adaptive downhill skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, and competitive sled hockey. Challenge Alaska fields sled hockey teams in regional leagues and tournaments, and also offers Special Hockey and a Warrior Program delivering no-cost sports and recreation for veterans with disabilities. Year-round activities span wheelchair basketball, adaptive cycling, archery, fishing, camping, and community book clubs.
Who It Helps
Challenge Alaska serves children and adults with physical, cognitive, and sensory disabilities, with dedicated programming for veterans with service-connected disabilities. Participants include individuals with spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairments, and developmental disabilities throughout Alaska.
