About this resource

About

Creative Growth Art Center, established in 1973 in Oakland, California, is the world's first independent art center dedicated to advancing the careers of artists with developmental, mental, and physical disabilities. Today it supports more than 140 professional artists in a fully accessible two-storey studio and gallery, with works exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.

What It Does

Creative Growth provides an open studio environment, professional gallery representation, and exhibition opportunities for resident artists. The public-facing gallery shows and sells original works, with proceeds shared directly with the creating artists. Staff support is available to help artists develop their practice at their own pace.

Who It Helps

Adult artists with developmental, mental, and physical disabilities, primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area. The studio's international exhibition reach also raises global visibility for disability in contemporary art.
