About
Google Lookout is a free accessibility app developed by Google for Android devices running version 6.0 and above. It uses on-device AI and computer vision to provide real-time audio descriptions of the environment without requiring a persistent internet connection. The app is available in more than 30 languages and is deeply integrated with Android accessibility services including TalkBack.
What It Does
Lookout operates through several task-specific modes: Explore mode identifies objects, people, and text in the surroundings and announces them aloud; Text mode reads signs, labels, and text as the camera moves across them; Documents mode captures and reads a full page of text or handwriting; Currency mode identifies banknote denominations; Food labels mode identifies packaged food products by barcode or packaging label; and Find mode helps users locate specific objects — such as doors, chairs, or vehicles — by indicating their direction and approximate distance in real time.
Who It Helps
Designed for Android users who are blind or have low vision, particularly those already in the Google ecosystem who benefit from a deeply integrated, no-cost visual assistance tool built natively into Android accessibility infrastructure.
