About this resource

About

LUCI is a hardware and software platform built specifically for power wheelchair users, founded in 2017 by brothers Barry and Jered Dean who were motivated by personal family experience with power wheelchair use. The product has earned recognition from TIME's Best Inventions, Popular Science's "Best of What's New," and CES Innovation Awards for advancing wheelchair safety and connectivity.

What It Does

LUCI clips onto existing power wheelchairs and provides obstacle detection using stereo cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors, automatically slowing or stopping the chair before collisions with steps, drop-offs, or people. The MyLuci companion app streams real-time seating pressure data, battery status, usage logs, and environmental information to the user and anyone they choose to share it with — including family members or clinical teams.

Who It Helps

Power wheelchair users who want added safety and confidence navigating their environment — especially those with limited reaction time, sensation, or upper body mobility — as well as caregivers and clinicians seeking data-driven insights into seating health and daily wheelchair usage.
