About
Founded in 1982 and operating at venues including Sunday River, Sugarloaf, and Pineland Farms, Maine Adaptive is the largest adaptive recreation programme in Maine. Every winter lesson, trail pass or lift ticket, adaptive equipment loan, and instruction session is provided completely free of charge, eliminating financial barriers to snow sport participation.
What It Does
Maine Adaptive offers alpine skiing, alpine racing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, and snowshoeing instruction delivered by certified adaptive ski instructors and trained volunteers. Participants are individually assessed and matched with equipment—mono-skis, bi-skis, outriggers, tethers—suited to their specific needs. Winter adventure retreats also include court sports and evening social programmes. Summer programming adds cycling, paddling, and climbing.
Who It Helps
Maine Adaptive is open to children aged four and above, adults, and older adults with any disability—physical, cognitive, visual, or otherwise. There is no upper age limit and no prior experience required. The entirely free model ensures that financial circumstances never determine who can participate.
