About
Soundscape was created by Microsoft Research as a novel approach to accessible navigation enriching ambient awareness rather than replacing it with step-by-step directions. After Microsoft open-sourced the project, a volunteer community (soundscape-community) took over active development. It is free on the iOS App Store and is used worldwide by blind and low-vision travellers.
What It Does
Soundscape places labelled audio beacons and location markers in 3D space using OpenStreetMap data, so road names, points of interest, and intersections sound as if they are coming from the direction they physically are. Users set a destination beacon that continuously plays from the correct direction, monitor intersection callouts, and filter which types of landmarks they hear. The 3D audio works through standard headphones without special hardware.
Who It Helps
Soundscape is designed for blind and low-vision pedestrians who want richer ambient awareness when walking independently. It is especially valued for building confidence in new areas, reducing travel anxiety, and complementing cane or guide dog use — rather than replacing wayfinding skills.
