About this resource

About

NIAD Art Center (Nurturing Independence through Artistic Development) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Richmond, California, founded in 1982. NIAD artists have exhibited at the Whitney Museum, SFMOMA, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and work by NIAD artists is held in major permanent collections internationally.

What It Does

NIAD provides professional studio space across painting, printmaking, ceramics, fibre arts, and digital media to over 75 adult artists with disabilities. Artwork is sold through the organisation's gallery store at niadart.org, with 50% of every sale going directly to the artist. The studio programme is supported by a staff of 30 working artists who provide professional guidance alongside hands-on instruction.

Who It Helps

Adults with developmental and physical disabilities — including intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, and autism — who want a sustained, professionally supported artistic practice and the opportunity to earn income from their creative work.
