About this resource

About

OpenAAC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on removing barriers in the AAC ecosystem through open standards, freely available resources, and community collaboration. Its Open Board Format (OBF) standard allows communication boards to move between AAC apps, freeing users and families from vendor lock-in and enabling greater interoperability across the field.

What It Does

OpenAAC publishes the Open Board Format standard for interoperable AAC boards, free symbol libraries with ARASAAC integration, educational resources for AAC users and families, and a certification programme for AAC tools based on minimum quality standards. It organises the free annual online conference AAC in the Cloud, which brings together AAC users, SLPs, educators, and developers from around the world. All standards, tools, and resources are open-source and freely licensed.

Who It Helps

OpenAAC benefits the entire AAC community — users who want interoperable boards, SLPs and educators seeking free resources, and developers building inclusive AAC software. It is especially valuable for families and individuals in low-resource settings where commercial AAC tools are unaffordable.
