About
Route4U began in Budapest and now serves users across Hungary, the UK, Ireland, France, and beyond. It claims to be the world's first app to incorporate pavement-level accessibility data — including kerb heights, slopes, and surface quality — into personalised route calculations for people with varying mobility needs.
What It Does
Users configure the app for their device type — active wheelchair, power wheelchair, handbike, pram, or walking — and set personal thresholds for maximum slope and kerb height. The app calculates routes avoiding inaccessible paths and provides turn-by-turn navigation. On-device sensors (GPS, gyroscope, accelerometer) automatically capture and contribute sidewalk accessibility data as users travel, growing the community database.
Who It Helps
Wheelchair users, power-chair users, handbike riders, pram users, and pedestrians with limited mobility navigating urban environments. Two-thirds of community contributors are non-disabled people actively improving the map for others — making it a genuinely cross-community tool.
