About
Shake-A-Leg Miami is a nonprofit marine recreation and education organisation founded in 1987 by Christopher Voelker, a sailor with a spinal cord injury who believed that the water could be a transformative environment for people with disabilities. Based at Biscayne Bay in Miami, Shake-A-Leg operates year-round using the mild South Florida climate.
What It Does
Core programmes include adaptive sailing (using modified sailboats with accessible cockpits and joystick controls), kayaking and paddling, aquatic fitness, and marine science education. A fleet of accessible vessels — including boats that can accommodate power wheelchairs — is maintained on site. The organisation also runs youth leadership and environmental education programmes and offers an annual gala fundraiser open to the public.
Who It Helps
Children and adults with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, developmental disabilities, visual impairments, and other conditions who want to experience sailing, kayaking, and marine recreation. Located in Miami, Florida, with programmes running throughout the year.
