About
Speak for Yourself was created by two certified speech-language pathologists who are experienced AAC specialists, grounding the app firmly in evidence-based AAC practice and language development research. It is available on iOS with a free SFY-Lite evaluation version, and is widely recommended by SLPs who work with non-speaking individuals.
What It Does
The app uses a stable 119-location core vocabulary layout that does not change as vocabulary grows, supporting reliable motor patterns for every word. There is no symbolic reorganisation as the user progresses, reducing cognitive load and supporting automaticity. Features include phrase banks, sentence building, customisable peripheral vocabulary pages, and flexible access options including switch and head tracking.
Who It Helps
Speak for Yourself supports non-speaking children and adults with autism, cerebral palsy, childhood apraxia of speech, and other complex communication needs. Its consistent motor plan makes it especially well suited for long-term AAC users who benefit from stable word locations and the development of motor memory over time.
