About
Speak for Yourself is an iPad AAC app created by two speech-language pathologists specialising in motor-planning-based communication. Built on research demonstrating that consistent motor patterns reduce cognitive load and speed communication, the app has been adopted by thousands of users worldwide since its launch.
What It Does
The main screen displays 119 core vocabulary words in positions that never change, even as the vocabulary grows to more than 14,000 buttons. Users learn the location of each word once and retain that knowledge for life—motor memory replaces visual search. An open/close feature lets families start with a single word and expand gradually at the communicator's pace. Switch access is supported, and an extensive library of free training videos and a peer community provide ongoing implementation support.
Who It Helps
Speak for Yourself is used by children and adults with autism, cerebral palsy, apraxia, Down syndrome, genetic syndromes, and other complex communication needs. Its motor-planning focus particularly benefits communicators who struggle with visual scanning and those for whom automaticity and communication rate are priority goals.
