About this resource

About

Tovertafel (Dutch for "Magic Table") was developed by Tover in the Netherlands and is now available internationally, including in the United States and Canada. The device projects vibrant, real-time interactive games onto any flat surface, creating a low-barrier group play experience for people who may not be able to participate in traditional tabletop games.

What It Does

The Tovertafel's infrared sensors detect hand and arm movements, triggering on-screen game responses without requiring fine motor control, buttons, or verbal commands. Games span five difficulty levels so every player participates at their own pace. Peer-reviewed studies — including a 2024 Frontiers in Neurology controlled intervention — document lower apathy levels and increased social interaction among users with dementia, and increased alertness and self-confidence among users with intellectual disabilities.

Who It Helps

Adults and children with intellectual disabilities, dementia, or complex communication needs who may otherwise be excluded from group recreational and tabletop gaming activities.
