About this resource

About

Administered through the VA's Rehabilitation and Prosthetic Services, the Assistive Technology Program is a benefit available to eligible U.S. veterans and active-duty service members with service-connected or VA-treated disabilities. It is one of the largest single-payer AT programmes in the world.

What It Does

The programme provides power and manual wheelchairs, environmental control units (smart home), adaptive computer and communication devices, prosthetics, and custom-designed assistive devices through VA medical centres. The Specially Adapted Housing Assistive Technology (SAHAT) grant awards up to $500,000 to developers of new AT including voice-controlled home systems and smart home adaptations for severely disabled veterans. The website lists AT categories, VA contacts, and how to apply for AT benefits through a VA healthcare provider.

Who It Helps

U.S. military veterans and active-duty service members with disabilities from mobility impairment, spinal cord injury, limb loss, traumatic brain injury, or other service-related conditions who are enrolled in VA healthcare.
