About this resource

About

Developed by UK-based WeWALK and backed by internationally recognised innovation awards, the Smart Cane 2 layers AI-powered technology onto the familiar long cane rather than replacing it — acknowledging that the white cane remains a trusted and culturally significant mobility tool for many blind users.

What It Does

Ultrasonic sensors built into the cane handle detect obstacles at chest and head height that a standard cane sweep cannot reach, sending vibration alerts to warn the user before contact. The WeWALK companion app (iOS and Android) provides GPS-based turn-by-turn navigation, nearby transit information, and points of interest announced through the cane's built-in speaker. Voice commands and a touchpad on the handle allow fully hands-free control.

Who It Helps

Blind and low-vision white-cane users who want GPS navigation, above-ground obstacle detection, and voice assistance integrated into their existing mobility tool without carrying or managing a separate device.
