About
Wheelmap was launched in 2010 by German nonprofit Sozialhelden e.V. and social entrepreneur Raul Krauthausen. Built on the open OpenStreetMap platform, it allows accessibility data to be freely contributed and used by anyone in the world — making it one of the most geographically comprehensive wheelchair accessibility databases available.
What It Does
Contributors rate public places using three colour-coded levels: green (fully wheelchair accessible), orange (partially accessible), or red (not accessible). Anyone can add new venues or update existing entries, making the database a living, maintained resource. Web, iOS, and Android apps are all available. The platform deliberately focuses on everyday public spaces — not just disability-specific venues — to promote inclusion in ordinary community life.
Who It Helps
Wheelchair users and people who use wheeled mobility aids who want to plan accessible routes through cities and towns, whether at home or travelling abroad.
