AT Chat
AT Chat is a peer-led, co-designed assistive technology community that connects people with disability to information, mentorship, and lived experience about assistive technology. Based in Osborne Park, Perth, it operates Australia's first dedicated AT Mentors programme and an active national online peer community for navigating AT decisions.
About
AT Chat was co-designed from the ground up with people with disability, commencing its design process in 2017 in Western Australia. It is operated under Independent Living Australia (iLA) and is headquartered at 1B/76 Hasler Road, Osborne Park, Perth. AT Chat was created to address a critical gap: most Australians with disability lack access to peer-based, lived-experience guidance on assistive technology decisions — particularly when navigating NDIS funding.
What They Do
AT Chat delivers peer support through AT Mentors — people with disability who are qualified AT advisors helping peers discover, trial, and fund assistive technology. It operates AT Chatterbox, a private peer Facebook community with over 1,300 members sharing lived-experience AT knowledge. AT Chat also produces accessible information resources, facilitates webinars, and advocates for improved AT access within the NDIS. All services are co-designed with people with disability and informed by genuine lived experience.
Who They Serve
AT Chat serves Australians with disability who are navigating assistive technology — whether exploring options for the first time, seeking NDIS funding, or connecting with others who use similar tools. Its peer model is particularly valuable for people who feel overwhelmed by clinical or commercial AT advice. While based in Western Australia, AT Chat's online platform and resources are accessible nationally, spanning a wide range of disabilities and AT needs.
