Center for Accessible Living(CAL)
The Center for Accessible Living is Kentucky's first and longest-running Independent Living Center, governed by people with disabilities and providing peer support, advocacy, and practical services since 1981. CAL empowers Kentuckians with disabilities to live independently through offices in Louisville, Murray, and Bowling Green.
About
The Center for Accessible Living (CAL) opened in January 1981 as Kentucky's first Independent Living Center, following a 1980 needs assessment that found twice as many people with disabilities in Jefferson County as previously estimated. CAL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a board majority of people with disabilities, making it a truly disability-governed organisation.
What They Do
CAL provides the five federally recognised core independent living services: information and referral, independent living skills training, peer support, individual and systems advocacy, and transition services (including school-to-work and nursing home–to-community transitions). Additional services include ramp building, employment support, housing coordination, and sign-language interpreting.
Who They Serve
CAL serves Kentuckians with all types of physical and other disabilities, primarily adults seeking to live independently or transition out of institutional settings. Services are available statewide through offices in Louisville, Murray, and Bowling Green.
