California Foundation for Independent Living Centers(CFILC)
The California Foundation for Independent Living Centers is a statewide network that supports 28 Independent Living Centers collectively providing services and advocacy to more than 100,000 Californians with disabilities each year. Founded in 1976, CFILC builds the capacity of member ILCs through training, technical assistance, policy campaigns, assistive technology programmes, and disability-rights organising.
About
Founded in 1976, CFILC is Sacramento-based and serves as the training and technical assistance backbone for 28 Independent Living Centers operating in 50 communities across California. Each member ILC is run by and for people with disabilities, ensuring that lived experience drives priorities and programmes at every level.
What They Do
CFILC conducts statewide policy advocacy on healthcare, education, housing, and transportation; manages an Assistive Technology Network connecting AT resources to Californians in need; runs the Youth Organizing (YO!) programme for young people with disabilities; and administers the Digital Access Project, which helps low-income people with disabilities access subsidised broadband internet.
Who They Serve
CFILC and its 28 member ILCs collectively serve Californians with all types of disabilities across the state, with particular reach into low-income communities, transition-age youth, and individuals moving out of institutional settings.
