California Foundation for Independent Living Centers(CFILC)
Since 1976, CFILC has built the capacity of California's network of Independent Living Centers and led statewide disability organising, policy advocacy, and assistive technology access programmes serving over 100,000 people with disabilities annually.
About
The California Foundation for Independent Living Centers (CFILC) began in 1976 as a peer support network for executive directors of California's fledgling Independent Living Centers (ILCs). Today CFILC is a membership organisation whose board consists of the executive directors of 28 ILCs operating in more than 50 communities across the state. Independent Living Centers are consumer-controlled nonprofits — meaning people with disabilities direct them.
What They Do
CFILC builds ILC capacity through training, technical assistance, and shared infrastructure. Its Disability Organizing Network deploys full-time staff organizers embedded in each member ILC to advance civic participation and state-level advocacy. The Ability Tools programme provides assistive technology information, device loans, and demonstrations to Californians with disabilities. CFILC also operates a Youth Organizing initiative and a Disability Disaster Access & Resources programme.
Who They Serve
CFILC's member ILCs collectively serve over 100,000 people with disabilities annually across California. Individuals with all types of disabilities benefit from independent living services, advocacy, and assistive technology access. Particular emphasis is placed on low-income Californians, transition-age youth, and people in rural communities.
