Council of Canadians with Disabilities(CCD)
The Council of Canadians with Disabilities is Canada's oldest national, disability-led human rights organization, uniting provincial advocacy groups since 1976 to advance inclusion across all areas of society. It pursues disability rights through Supreme Court of Canada interventions, federal consultations, and public education on issues from accessible transport to income security.
About
Founded in 1976 as the Coalition of Provincial Organizations of the Handicapped and renamed in 1994, the Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) is headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It operates as a national umbrella body that unites provincial and national disability advocacy organizations to present a unified voice on disability rights in Canada.
What They Do
CCD conducts systemic advocacy at the federal level, intervenes in landmark Supreme Court of Canada cases, and produces research and public education resources on disability issues. Priority areas include accessible transportation, income security, employment, housing, accessible technology, and implementation of the Accessible Canada Act and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Who They Serve
CCD represents Canadians with all types of disabilities. Membership is restricted to organizations run by and for people with disabilities, ensuring the Council remains genuinely disability-led and grounded in the lived experience of disabled Canadians.
