Disabled International Foundation Sierra Leone(DIF-SIL)

DIF-SIL was founded in 2008 by disability rights activist Imambay Kamara to advocate for persons with disabilities and create employment opportunities in Freetown. The foundation was a central civil society actor in securing passage of Sierra Leone's landmark 2011 Persons with Disabilities Act.

About

Founded in 2008 and operating across Sierra Leone and the UK, DIF-SIL follows the Social Model of Disability — recognising that people are disabled more by inaccessible design and services than by their impairment. It maintains a workspace in Freetown that provides employment to disabled adults, many of whom acquired disabilities during the civil war.

What They Do

DIF-SIL campaigns for disability rights, provides employment and livelihood opportunities for disabled adults in Freetown, and fundraises in the UK to sustain its Sierra Leone programmes. It was instrumental in advocating for the 2011 Persons with Disabilities Act and continues to monitor its implementation.

Who They Serve

Adults with disabilities in Sierra Leone, with particular focus on war-wounded persons and those facing employment barriers.

Community Note

Instrumental in passing Sierra Leone's 2011 Persons with Disabilities Act.
