Disability Alliance BC(DABC)
Disability Alliance BC is a province-wide, cross-disability advocacy and direct-service organization based in Vancouver that has been governed by and for people with disabilities since 1977. DABC provides free legal advocacy, income tax clinics, systemic policy work, and peer support to help people with all types of disabilities navigate systems across British Columbia.
About
Founded in 1977 by disability activists, Disability Alliance BC (DABC) is one of British Columbia's oldest cross-disability advocacy organizations. Governed exclusively by people with disabilities — only persons with a disability may vote or serve on the Board of Directors — DABC is headquartered in Vancouver and serves clients in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Victoria, Kelowna, and Prince George, as well as remotely across BC.
What They Do
DABC operates a Disability Law Clinic, a free income tax assistance program for low-income people with disabilities, systemic advocacy on federal and provincial policy, and a Disability Benefits Advocacy service. The organization also conducts research on barriers facing people with disabilities and produces plain-language publications on disability rights in BC.
Who They Serve
DABC serves British Columbians with any type of disability who need advocacy, legal information, or help navigating provincial and federal disability benefits systems. Priority legal services go to those with low income; information and referral services are available to anyone across BC.
