Disability Rights California(DRC)
California's federally designated protection and advocacy agency for people with disabilities and the largest disability rights organisation in the nation. For over 45 years DRC has defended the rights of Californians with disabilities in education, employment, housing, healthcare, and safety.
About
Founded in 1978 and headquartered in Sacramento, Disability Rights California (DRC) is a statewide non-profit and California's federally mandated protection and advocacy (P&A) agency. With offices across the state, it is the largest disability rights organisation in the United States, born out of federal legislation requiring every state to have an independent disability rights body.
What They Do
DRC provides free legal assistance, investigates reports of abuse and neglect, promotes systemic policy reform, supports self-advocacy groups, and trains community members on disability rights. The organisation litigates on behalf of individuals and pursues legislative changes affecting Californians with all types of disabilities.
Who They Serve
DRC serves Californians of all ages with any type of disability — physical, developmental, psychiatric, sensory, or chronic — with particular focus on those facing barriers in education, healthcare, housing, or the justice and mental health systems.
