Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations(GFD)
Ghana's national umbrella of Disabled Persons' Organisations, founded in 1987, advocating for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities through policy influence, capacity building, and community engagement across all administrative regions.
About
The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), formerly the Ghana Federation of the Disabled, was established in 1987 as a non-partisan, non-religious, not-for-profit national umbrella of organisations of persons with disabilities. GFD brings together nine national member DPOs, with branches in all administrative regions and over 200 of Ghana's 216 districts — the broadest disability civil society platform in the country.
What They Do
GFD advocates for the rights of persons with disabilities by influencing government policies, programmes, and budgets at national and local levels. The federation engages Parliament, the National Commission on Civic Education, and UN bodies to promote disability-inclusive legislation, and strengthens member organisations through institutional capacity-building and grants. GFD also monitors implementation of the Persons with Disability Act and Ghana's CRPD obligations.
Who They Serve
GFD serves Ghanaians with all categories of disability — physical, visual, hearing, intellectual, and psychosocial — through its nine member organisations, each representing a specific constituency. The federation's extensive district-level presence ensures advocacy and representation for persons with disabilities in both urban and deeply rural communities throughout Ghana.
