Independent Living Canada(ILC)
Independent Living Canada is the national federation of Independent Living Centres run by and for people with disabilities, championing the philosophy that disabled people are the best experts on their own needs and have the right to direct all aspects of their lives. Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Ottawa, ILC represents its cross-disability network of member IL Centres and provides a collective voice on national disability policy.
About
Independent Living Canada / Vie Autonome Canada (ILC) was founded in 1986 by the Independent Living movement's membership and is headquartered at 2451 Riverside Drive in Ottawa. ILC evolved from the Canadian Association of Independent Living Centres and today represents a nationwide network of IL Centres operating under the IL philosophy.
What They Do
ILC advocates at the national level for federal policies that expand self-directed supports for Canadians with disabilities, builds capacity within member IL Centres, fosters inter-centre partnerships, and maintains relationships with the Global Network of Independent Living. Member centres deliver peer support, independent living skills training, community integration, and information and referral services to their local communities.
Who They Serve
Independent Living Canada serves Canadians with all disability types seeking greater autonomy and community participation, with particular emphasis on adults who benefit from peer support, self-advocacy, and individually directed services through the national IL Centre network.
