Indigenous Disability Canada(IDC)

An internationally recognized national Indigenous organization serving the unique disability needs of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Canada. IDC holds Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and advocates for full inclusion at the intersection of Indigeneity and disability.

About

Founded in 1991 as the BC Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (BCANDS), Indigenous Disability Canada operates nationally with offices in Victoria, BC, and Ottawa, ON. It is one of the only organizations of its kind in Canada and is recognized internationally for its work addressing the intersection of Indigeneity and disability.

What They Do

IDC provides cross-disability support, services, and referrals for Indigenous peoples with disabilities, conducts research, facilitates community training, and advocates at national and international levels. They maintain a directory of Indigenous disability organizations and support culturally appropriate approaches to disability inclusion.
