Leonard Cheshire Disability Zimbabwe(LCDZ)
A Zimbabwean disability service and advocacy organisation established in 1981, providing health, rehabilitation, orthopaedic, and community resilience services while strengthening the capacity of local Disabled Persons' Organisations across Zimbabwe.
About
Leonard Cheshire Disability Zimbabwe (LCDZ), originally established as Leonard Cheshire Homes Zimbabwe in 1981, is part of the global Leonard Cheshire network. In 2008, LCDZ made a deliberate transition from residential accommodation to non-residential, community-based outreach — reflecting a rights-based approach that promotes independence and inclusion for persons with disabilities across Zimbabwe.
What They Do
LCDZ delivers health and rehabilitation services including orthopaedic care, orthotics, and mobility solutions through a specialist Orthopaedic Centre. The TORCHES programme (Towards Resilient Communities with Health, Equality and Safety) addresses community resilience, violence prevention, and HIV awareness for persons with disabilities. LCDZ also builds the organisational capacity of local DPOs across Zimbabwe and collaborates with partners on inclusive education and eye health projects.
Who They Serve
LCDZ serves Zimbabweans of all ages with physical disabilities, mobility impairments, and visual impairments, as well as broader cross-disability constituencies through community outreach. Programmes reach urban neighbourhoods in Harare and rural communities in Masvingo and other provinces, with particular attention to women and children with disabilities who face compounded vulnerability.
