Myanmar Independent Living Initiative(MILI)
A national disabled-led organisation founded in 2011 by persons with disabilities in Myanmar, advancing independent living and equal rights through peer support and advocacy. With 28 branches across 10 regions and over 4,750 members, MILI is one of the country's most active disability-led organisations.
About
Myanmar Independent Living Initiative (MILI) was established in Yangon on 8 May 2011 by six individuals with disabilities who had completed Japan's DUSKIN Leadership Training. Formally registered with Myanmar's Ministry of Home Affairs, MILI has grown to 28 local branches across 10 regions and states with over 4,750 members.
What They Do
MILI operates through three pillars: Development (rights education, peer counselling, assistive-device provision), Political (policy advocacy and disability law reform), and Social-Business (income-generation enterprises run by members). The organisation trains disability advocates, coordinates independent-living centres, and maintains a disability resource pool connecting people with local services.
Who They Serve
MILI serves persons with all types of disabilities in Myanmar, with a focus on working-age adults. Registered members access peer counselling, vocational skills training, and assistive devices; the organisation also supports family members and local DPO leaders across the country.
