National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People(NCPEDP)
India's leading cross-disability advocacy organisation working on awareness, access, education, employment, and rights legislation, with a national partner network across every state and union territory.
About NCPEDP
The National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) was founded in 1996 by Javed Abidi, one of India's most prominent disability rights activists. It functions as a national focal point for disability rights policy, advocating for the rights of people with all types of disabilities across every sector of Indian society.
What They Do
NCPEDP works at the intersection of policy, employment, and awareness:
- Policy advocacy — lobbying government for rights-based legislation, including the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016
- National Disability Network — a partner in every state and union territory providing on-the-ground reach
- Employment campaigns — pushing corporations and public sector employers to meet disability inclusion benchmarks
- Helen Keller Awards — annual awards recognising outstanding contributions to disability inclusion in the corporate and government sectors
Who They Serve
NCPEDP serves adults with all types of disabilities across India, with a particular emphasis on employment access and systemic barrier removal.
Impact
NCPEDP was instrumental in the passage of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, which expanded the definition of disability from 7 to 21 categories and mandated 4% reservation in government jobs for persons with disabilities.
