Organization
National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda(NUDIPU)
Uganda's national umbrella organisation for persons with disabilities, founded in 1987, uniting 114 district unions and 17 member DPOs to advocate for disability rights, inclusive services, and improved livelihoods for all Ugandans with disabilities.
About
The National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) was formed on 14 November 1987 as an indigenous umbrella NGO bringing together all categories of disability — physical, sensory, intellectual, and psychosocial. With 38+ years of operation, over 100 completed projects, and more than 50,000 beneficiaries, NUDIPU is Uganda's foremost disability rights body, organising through 114 district unions and 17 national member organisations.
What They Do
NUDIPU advocates for disability rights through parliamentary engagement, public interest litigation support, and community mobilisation at local government level. Programmes include inclusive education, economic empowerment, ICT and digital literacy, gender inclusion, and climate change resilience for persons with disabilities. NUDIPU also engages the African Union, UN bodies, and Disabled Peoples' International to position Uganda's disability agenda within international frameworks.
Who They Serve
NUDIPU serves all Ugandans with disabilities — from children in school-age programmes to working-age adults and older persons in economic empowerment initiatives. Its district union structure provides rural reach across all four regions of Uganda, with targeted programmes addressing the compounded vulnerabilities of women, girls, and youth with disabilities.
