Slovak Humanitarian Council(SHR)
Slovenská humanitná rada (SHR) is Slovakia's leading non-governmental umbrella body for organisations serving people with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups, active for over 30 years and a formal advisory member of the Slovak Government's Council for Persons with Disabilities. It delivers direct services, publishes disability-focused magazines, and supports humanitarian response for disabled refugees.
About
Founded in Bratislava more than 30 years ago, Slovenská humanitná rada (SHR) has grown into one of Slovakia's most prominent civil society umbrella bodies in the social sector. It is a member of the Slovak Government's advisory body for non-governmental organisations and also serves on the Government Council for Persons with Disabilities, giving it direct influence over disability policy at the highest level.
What They Do
SHR provides care, counselling, and direct assistance to people with disabilities and socially disadvantaged individuals, and delivers humanitarian services in partnership with UNICEF and UNHCR (including safe-space Blue Dot centres for displaced people). The organisation publishes Humanita (with Humanita Plus supplement) — a disability-focused magazine in Slovak — and Carissimi, Slovakia's only Hungarian-language magazine for people with disabilities and their carers. SHR also supports Slovak civil society capacity building through training and policy engagement.
Who They Serve
People with disabilities and chronically ill individuals throughout Slovakia, including Hungarian-speaking communities. Since 2022, SHR has extended its reach to include people with disabilities displaced by the war in Ukraine.
