Union Nationale des Femmes Handicapées de Côte d'Ivoire(UNAFEHCI)
National union specifically advancing the rights and inclusion of women and girls with disabilities in Côte d'Ivoire, addressing the double discrimination of disability and gender. Founded in 2006 with over 1,000 members, UNAFEHCI distributes assistive devices and advocates for gender-responsive disability policy.
About
Union Nationale des Femmes Handicapées de Côte d'Ivoire (UNAFEHCI) was created in March 2006 and officially launched on 23 August 2006 in Abidjan. Affiliated with the national federation FAHCI, the organisation was established to address the compounded barriers faced by women with disabilities who experience both gender-based and disability-related discrimination. It has grown to over 1,000 members nationwide.
What They Do
UNAFEHCI advocates for the integration of disability-specific needs into health policy—including malaria prevention and reproductive health programmes—and campaigns for women with disabilities to be included in national economic-empowerment schemes. At its annual solidarity day, the union distributes wheelchairs, toys, and supplies to children with disabilities. It also runs capacity-building workshops on self-advocacy and liaises with UN Women on skills-development initiatives for women with disabilities.
Who They Serve
UNAFEHCI serves women and girls with physical, sensory, intellectual, and psychosocial disabilities across all regions of Côte d'Ivoire, with priority given to those excluded from mainstream health, education, and employment services.
