About this resource

About

Co:Writer Universal, developed by Don Johnston, uses topic-based word prediction — meaning it suggests words based on the subject being written about, not just the previous word. This makes it especially effective for students who struggle with spelling and written expression. It runs in a browser and as iOS and Chrome apps.

What It Does

Co:Writer predicts words as students type and reads suggestions aloud so they can choose without needing to read the full word. It includes built-in text-to-speech to read back written text, speech-to-text dictation, and a floating toolbar that works on top of Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and email. Topic dictionaries can be built for classroom vocabulary or specialist subjects.

Who It Helps

Students with dyslexia, spelling difficulties, dysgraphia, motor impairments, expressive language disorders, or aphasia — from elementary school through adulthood. Widely used as an IEP accommodation.
