Published by the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) of the Council for Exceptional Children, the DEC Recommended Practices bridge research and daily practice in early intervention and early childhood special education. First published in 1993 and last revised in 2014 in partnership with the ECTA Center, they are internationally recognised as the definitive practice framework for the birth-to-eight field.
The 66 practices are organised across eight domains: Leadership, Assessment, Environment, Family, Instruction, Interaction, Teaming and Collaboration, and Transition. Free downloadable practice guides, performance checklists, and family-friendly guides for each domain are available on the DEC website. The companion CONNECT Modules (connectmodules.dec-sped.org) provide self-paced online learning tied directly to the practices.
Early intervention specialists, early childhood special educators, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, paraprofessionals, programme administrators, and families seeking guidance on evidence-based inclusive practices for young children with disabilities ages 0–8.
