About this resource

About

First Signs, Inc. is a national nonprofit that has led the field in early identification and intervention for autism spectrum disorder and related developmental conditions since the late 1990s. The organisation focuses on the critical birth-to-three window, during which early identification and intervention yield the greatest developmental benefits.

What It Does

First Signs offers parent-facing guides on early warning signs of autism and developmental delays, organised by age and developmental domain. The site provides an overview of validated developmental screening instruments, a seven-step screening protocol for paediatricians, and guidance on what families should expect after a developmental concern is raised — including how to request an IDEA Part C evaluation and access early intervention services at no cost. Their educational materials include the widely used "Red Flags" checklist for children under 36 months.

Who It Helps

Parents and caregivers of children birth to age three who have concerns about social communication, language development, or behaviour, as well as paediatricians, family physicians, and early intervention providers who conduct developmental surveillance during well-child visits.
