Housed at the University of Texas at Austin and launched in August 2023, the National Disability Center for Student Success was established through a $5 million award from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). Led by principal investigator Stephanie W. Cawthon, it is the first national centre dedicated to producing actionable research specifically on disabled student experiences in postsecondary education — bridging a long-standing gap in the evidence base.
The centre conducts research on disability disclosure, instructor attitudes, and institutional access factors, and publishes its findings as free, publicly accessible reports. Its flagship output is the College Accessibility Measure (CAM) — the first comprehensive assessment tool built from disabled students' own perspectives — along with a national report on college student experiences that institutions can use to benchmark and improve their disability services.
Disabled college students seeking evidence of what good institutional support looks like, higher education administrators and disability resource professionals pursuing evidence-based improvements, and researchers and policymakers focused on postsecondary equity.
