About this resource

About

The Ticket to Work and Self-Sufficiency Programme, administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA), removes the fear of losing Medicare or Medicaid as the primary barrier to work for disability beneficiaries. Everyone aged 18–64 who receives SSDI or SSI due to a disability is eligible to participate at no cost through the Choose Work portal at choosework.ssa.gov.

What It Does

Participants receive a "ticket" they assign to an authorised Employment Network (EN) or state Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency, which then provides individualised services — job coaching, training, and placement assistance — at no charge. A companion Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) programme offers free counselling on how work will affect benefits, helping people make informed decisions before and after accepting employment.

Who It Helps

Any person who receives Social Security disability benefits (SSDI or SSI) and is between ages 18 and 64 can use the programme. It is especially valuable for people who have been on benefits for an extended period and feel uncertain about what will happen to their healthcare and income if they return to work.
